BunkerLove Festival 2013 in Hirtshals

Liden Karen was a collaboration with Uma Tranter who sang the traditional Danish folk song, "Liden Karen". The video was installed in a bunker for the BunkerLove festival 2013 in Hirtshals. The traditional folk song tells the story of a young girl, Liden Karen, who catches the eye of a married king. She "shines like a star amongst the other handmaids small" and he tries to make her his mistress. She resists his advances, telling him to return to his queen and let her go with dignity. His offers become increasingly generous, but she continues to refuse him so he resorts to imprisoning her in a tower and torturing her. She dies under the torture and is borne up to heaven by two white doves. In the final verse, he is visited by two black ravens who bring him the horror of hell. The song encapsulated the festival's themes of occupation and resistance throughout the ages, this time with a theme of an attempted sexual occupation.
